ts Rail division is a leading provider of track construction, maintenance and renewal services, including the supply, operation and development of specialised on-track technologies. The division owns and operates more than 500 high- performance machines with several world- firsts in the fleet. SB Rail, Swietelsky’s UK joint venture
business with Babcock, has a reputation for introducing the latest on-track technologies, and the partners were the first to bring into full operational service the following machine types to the UK:
• 08-4x4/4S tamper • APT 500L mobile flash butt welder • AFM 2000 ballast distribution system • KRC 250 multi-tasking crane • RM 900 ballast cleaner (high output) • 09-3X dynamic tamper (high output) • P95 track relaying system (high output) • 09-32/4S dynamic tamper (high speed 1).
In addition, SB Rail was also the first
in the UK to undertake tandem tamping of S&C, the first to introduce technologies such as curve laser and tandem drive, and the first to achieve a 100 per cent track quality measure. SB Rail will soon introduce another first – the Plasser & Theurer Unimat 09- 4x4/4S. This is the modern successor of the 09 and Unimat 08-4x4 machines and is the culmination of many years’ experience and development. As railway networks have evolved with higher line speeds, increased traffic frequencies and heavier loads, so too have the demands placed on permanent way materials and the need for durable and stable track geometry. For S&C tamping in particular, heavier concrete bearers and rail sections together with wide-ranging
layout designs, required a complete review of machine concepts. Split design tamping banks equipped with tilting tines, heavy duty lifting and lining units and continuous action tamping in both plain line and S&C, have all been incorporated into this new machine. The 09-4x4/4S will offer the highest
output universal tamping capability available in the UK, with time needed for tamping S&C up to 40 per cent less and plain line outputs up to 30 per cent higher in comparison with older designs. The integrated DTS unit achieves rapid and measured consolidation of the track, restoring resistance to lateral displacement and making higher-speed hand-backs over S&C a reality. All known S&C layouts in existence can be tamped using the 09-4x4/4S, and ‘parallel tamping mode’ is used for synchronous work through larger layouts, including cross compatibility with earlier 08 machines with parallel mode, making this machine a true all-rounder. Equipped with the latest Plasser
intelligent control system (P-IC 2.0), the machine is operated from ergonomically
positioned touch panels or standard control desks. The tamping banks are operated in manual, semi-automatic or fully-automatic modes, depending on site conditions, and the synchronous 3-rail lifting unit provides additional lift to the S&C. The WIN ALC computer provides guidance to the machine’s levelling and lining systems, while the multi-channel DRP records a series of track quality measurements. Other features include a sleeper clearing comb and brush box with lateral conveyor to ensure sleeper tops are swept and cleared of stone. Designed and
built for working in the field for extended periods, the 09-4x4/4S has a 4,000 litre fuel tank, biodegradable oils in all systems and requires less depot-based maintenance than its predecessors to enhance availability and reliability.
