With the number of children in the UK living in poverty rising, there’s never been a greater need to provide pupils with a nutritious and filling breakfast
lthough it’s not commonplace for schools to offer pupils breakfast, more and more are opting to do so in the hope that it will not only fi ll children’s stomachs, but their minds too. The latest estimates show that there are now over 20,000 breakfast clubs nationwide. “It’s widely known that a good breakfast, providing slow release energy, is key to children learning and concentrating throughout the school day,” says Tony Davison, commercial manager of foodservice for Quorn Foods. “So, when creating a breakfast menu it’s important to keep this in mind.”
In the UK there are many reasons why a child may not
have breakfast in the morning, but in such fi nancially challenging times poverty is the most common reason at present. Save the Children report that 1.6m UK children live in severe

starts the day with the right breakfast as fuel for learning, believes no child’s education should suffer for the lack of a breakfast. The charity targets schools where over 50% of the children are living in poverty and eligible for free school meals (the UK average is 18%). “We feed 7,500 children every day in over 229 primary schools across the country,” explains Magic Breakfast founder Carmel McConnell. “We know that children are arriving at school with nothing to eat since the day before and our research is showing a sharp increase in need. “Magic Breakfast is continuing its drive to reduce the number of schools it has on its waiting list requesting urgent food aid. In the past 18 months, the waiting list has jumped from 40 to 140 and the charity is being required to expand rapidly to keep up with demand.”
