The Airedale Group, one of the UK’s leading providers of

commercial kitchens, has been recognised by its peers, winning 3 prestigious industry awards including both Cost Sector categories. The awards were presented by the
industry’s
representative body, CEDA. Out of 6 categories, Airedale won the awards in 3 of these categories and were runner up in a further two. Airedale were recognised for their outstanding work
for the refurbishments completed at Outwood Academy (Ripon) and at several schools with Caerphilly County Borough Council, as well as the new catering facilities at the iconic Co-operative Headquarters in Manchester, one of the most environmentally sustainable offi ce buildings in Europe.

Established in 1986, Airedale is one of only a few national operators that offer clients a full service offering; designing, manufacturing, building and maintaining commercial kitchens for over a generation. With nearly 30 years of trading experience and well over 10,000 kitchen schemes many of which have been completed in primary and secondary school kitchens, no-one comes with better credentials. Airedale is one of only a limited number of national contractors approved under the PRO5 CONTRACT 98 procurement contract for supply of catering equipment as well as for servicing. One of the key developments within recent years at
Airedale is their in-house building services offering: “Most kitchen projects, particularly refurbishments involve an element of building works, from asbestos removal to full structural surveys. A large proportion of the projects we undertake are full turnkey schemes including walls, fl oors, ceilings, mechanical and electrical, which is managed by our in-house team. We have just completed a program of kitchen refurbishments with 30 schools in a London Borough, working on an 8 week program from surveying to completion and handover, all of which required building works.” “More and more of our clients are looking for a partner with the capabilities of managing the entire scheme from start to fi nish, from back to front. Dealing with one contractor is more cost effective, simplifi es life for our clients and makes the process more effi cient. Not only this but particularly within education, where there is an ageing estate, we are fi nding the biggest limiting factor on any primary or secondary school kitchen refurbishment

Airedale a good depth of knowledge and understanding of a range of commercial catering operations. It is the application of this know-how which Rob believes Airedale has been recognised for. “We don’t just design and install kitchens. Every
element of our experience and knowledge is made to count in every scheme we do. For instance the data from our service business is invaluable. We manage in excess of 40,000 individual kitchens assets and we are constantly profi ling and benchmarking equipment performance and manufacturers service levels. Understanding how an asset performs over its lifetime is key to delivering a better return on investment for our clients. It is the application of this knowledge and working with the client to understand their strategic and operational objectives where we can add most value.”
Within education at the moment many authorities are facing similar challenges; increasing pupil numbers, more regulation and the drive to improve standards and increase meal take up, are all increasing pressure on existing catering operations. “For those involved in the catering industry within the public sector these are real issues, and many of our clients openly admit they are quickly reaching an impasse; they need to invest in their facilities but the capital budget simply isn’t there. Add to this, government initiatives such as plans to introduce cooking to the national curriculum for all 7 to 14 year olds from September, whilst being a good idea, many sites simply do not have the facilities that would meet the required safety standards. We are quickly reaching a tipping point and suppliers are being challenged to come up with ideas and solutions.” In response Airedale has recently launched their “Lease Earn Own” offering which is tailored for clients that have a need to invest in the entire facility whether new or refurbishment. The cost of investment for both the equipment costs and as well as any associated building costs can be fi nanced over the lifetime of the kitchen. “Included in this is our full care package, where we will service and maintain the equipment which gives clients certainty on what they are paying on a weekly and monthly basis. For a typical secondary school kitchen this can work out as low as adding 4p to the cost of every meal.” Rob states “As an industry we have to work together with our clients to come up with innovative solutions, these issues aren’t going to just go away.”
