Winning an EDUcatering Award might be a wonderful personal recognition from the industry, but it can also be a fantastic marketing tool, as shown in Reading. Colin McIntosh, winner of 2012 Local Authority Caterer of the Year, tells me in this month’s Big Interview about how his EDUcatering Award


helped to attract media attention and bring the issue of school meals to public attention. You can submit your nomination at www.educateringawards.co.uk. Also this month, Jane Renton takes some time away from school meals and looks at food provision in children’s care homes and foster homes. Let’s Get Cooking, the parent/child cookery programme run by the Children’s Food Trust, is running pilot schemes for care and foster parents and children to encourage bonding and improve healthy eating in these settings. You can read her experiences on page 18.


With one in 100 people now diagnosed with coeliac disease, I have been investigating


whether or not school caterers should be looking at providing more gluten-free options in their catering service. Some big high street restaurants


have made the move to provide


gluten-free menus, so perhaps now is the time for schools to do the same. You can fi nd out more about this on page 40.
