Business profile
Let Bachy solve the problem Dominic Gibbon, business support manager at Bachy Soletanche, commented on how the group best utilises the services it offers when faced with a large project with a range of requirements: ‘Bachy tends to work better if it actually has a problem to solve than if a client already has a pre-developed plan. Getting on- board early enough to be able to influence the final design means better value can be offered as often, when someone approaches the company with a packaged concept, it may be over-designed. ‘The company offers a full suite of geotechnical techniques to create cost- effective solutions through its large in-house design department, which has helped provide original or alternative designs to around 75 to 80 per cent of our tenders. That means we have the ability to look at solutions and we attempt to provide the most efficient, effective answer to any particular problem that may arise.’
Bachy Soletanche and its subsidiaries
Vibro Menard and Soil Engineering Geosciences have been successful in a number of recent bids for projects in London and further afield - in Reading, Cardiff and the Borders Railway - enabling Bachy to offer a commercial and technical investment opportunity for delivering major piling and compensation grouting contracts for rail companies
such as Crossrail, Costain and Network Rail.
The power of early involvement Bachy Soletanche has recently won a contract to do bored piling and restricted access piling works to facilitate the
re-development of London Bridge. Merridew explained: ‘London Bridge is a large, complex and high-value contract taking place over a number of years due to the way the structure is being demolished, and various new platforms are being transferred to avoid disruption to passengers. I believe two key factors helped Bachy win this contract. The first is our good working relationship with Costain as a client (Bachy is also part of its supply chain for geotechnical works), and secondly we provided good assistance during the ECI (early contractor involvement) phase. Various techniques and solutions were looked at and Bachy was involved in some preliminary test pile work that provided valuable information on the best methods to use which were put forward as part of the final solution.’ With major projects such as this coming to fruition, Bachy Soletanche’s ongoing association with the rail industry is certain. Chris Merridew concluded: ‘Bachy wants to maintain its involvement in rail infrastructure and the various projects that are coming on the horizon. We have a good working relationship with Network Rail and would obviously like to continue that through its various clients and host of techniques and innovations.’ Further information from Chris Merridew, Bachy Soletanche.
