The mechanical side of the repair was much more varied in its detail. The initial instruction was to fully strip the tram bogies and to produce detailed drawings of the working parts because, due to their age and wear, there were no accurate drawings of the bogies to work with.
In partnership with the customer’s engineering support team, a scope of work was drawn up for Sulzer Bootham Engineers to complete, including work to be performed on the axels, bearings, slip rings, main frames, springs, split spur wheels, brake link rods, brackets, suspension arms and the addition of hubometers.
The capability range offered by Sulzer Bootham Engineers meant that the bogies could be completely overhauled to modern standards (both operational and safety) but still retain the practical aspects and aesthetic of the legacy equipment. New materials were sourced to reverse engineer and re-manufacture the existing worn parts.

The company has some of the most modern and dedicated coil manufacturing facilities available for all types and sizes of AC and DC motors and generators.
In the UK and Australia the coil manufacturing plants include highly sophisticated in-house copper rolling mills, which produce copper of all sizes, thus eliminating potential delays caused by suppliers.
