elivering geotechnical services throughout the UK, Bachy Soletanche emerged in the UK after Piggot Foundations,
a specialist piling company in the northwest of England, was purchased by French foundation engineering company, Bachy, a move which gave the company its first foothold in the UK. Thirteen years later, Bachy merged with fellow specialist geotechnical contractors Soletanche and, in 1997 Bachy Soletanche was formed, creating the largest specialist geotechnical contractor in the world with a global presence. In the UK, Bachy Soletanche has a proven track record for high levels of safety, quality, best value and innovation within the field of foundation and underground engineering, and has a strong history of association with the rail industry. This can be accredited to the company’s in-house design skills and
expertise in ground preparation. Chris Merridew, managing director, elaborated: ‘The involvement that Bachy has with overground railway tends to be in developing piling solutions for stations, bridges and other major structures. We tend to get involved early working alongside and beneath a wide variety of structures, before or even during the demolition phase to make a head start on the programme. An example is the East London Line where we carried out all the piling, utilising various skills and techniques including large diameter bored piling, continuous flight auger (CFA) piling, cased secant piling, and restricted access mini piling.’
Growing portfolio of services Similar projects that the company has carried out include a 24-month compensation-grouting contract on the Northern and Piccadilly line, accessed
Geotechnical specialist Bachy Soletanche is, after 26 years, still deeply involved in the rail industry, where it executes ground engineering ready for heavy infrastructure projects
beneath London’s King’s Cross station. To complete the project, Bachy utilised its association with the Vinci Group and worked with Vincy’s ground investigation arm, Soil Engineering, which provided its specialist knowledge to the project thus enhancing Bachy’s capabilities in this area. ‘The project highlighted the power of collaboration and meant that Soil Engineering’s work in site investigation was added to Bachy’s growing portfolio of services,’ said Merridew.
Bachy Soletanche offers a range of geotechnical services, spanning complete construction to piling and foundation works. It can provide its clients with a competitive, fully-inclusive package or individual and more specific services. This can be particularly useful considering the competitive nature of pitching for projects, especially as many publicly- funded projects are often influenced by cost.
