Go-Ahead to fit new Knorr-Bremse driver advisory system on diesel fleet
he Go-Ahead Group has awarded Knorr-Bremse two contracts to fit an advanced, computerised driver advisory system on diesel fleets
at London Midland and Southern. The system helps the driver deliver optimum performance against the timetable and results in a reduction in fuel and CO2 emissions.
The LEADER DAS (driver advisory system) is being installed on 23 Class 170 DMUs and 27 Class 172 DMU trains operated by London Midland, and 16 Class 171 DMU trains operated by Southern. Fitted inside the driver’s cab, LEADER
DAS uses real time information about the train’s dynamics, the timetable and the route profile, including specific topography and speed limits. The system continually calculates the correct speed in the prevailing circumstances for a specific route, with the cab display showing the driver in advance how and when they can adapt their own driving style to optimise the progress of the train.
Phil Margrave, Go-Ahead’s group engineering director said: ‘The system
supports our commitment to seek new ways to cut our environmental impacts and meet our target of reducing our CO2 emissions per passenger journey by 20 per cent by 2015.’ Paul Goodhand, managing director of
Knorr-Bremse in the UK added: ‘We are pleased to be working in partnership with Go-Ahead on these new contracts which are the first we have signed in UK rail.’ Contact Nick Brailey, marketing and communications manager. Tel: 01225 898811

Keighley Laboratories achieves Nadcap Merit Accreditation
T
he Technical Services division of Keighley Laboratories has achieved Nadcap accreditation for a materials testing laboratory (MTL), a status
recognised globally as a mark of quality assurance excellence. The West Yorkshire company also gained
Merit grade, which rewards performance in Nadcap audits and reduces subsequent audit frequency.
‘Achieving Nadcap accreditation is
not easy but companies such as Keighley Laboratories go above and beyond that to
obtain Merit status, and the company should be justifiably proud,’ said Joe Pinto, executive vice president and CEO at the Performance Review Institute, which administers the Nadcap programme. Established in 1990, Nadcap represents a concerted, cooperative effort to improve quality while reducing costs. It defines a standardised approach to quality assurance and establishes requirements for accreditation, improving performance throughout the supply chain, utilising expert auditors to ensure familiarity with special processes and conducting technically superior in-depth quality audits. Nadcap accreditation is now vital for
securing subcontracting opportunities in the aerospace sector, as well as in quality-minded markets such as rail, with more than half of accredited companies reporting an upturn in sales and new business. Contact technical services’ commercial manager, Leonard Stott. Tel: 01535 664211
