Get a lift with Technical Cranes


2012 was a positive year for the supply of lifting equipment to the rail sector for Technical Cranes, and 2013 should see further growth


T


echnical Crains supplied Wabtec rail with a new twin beam 12.5 tonne safe working load overhead crane for one of its


production workshops. Towards the end of the year the installation of new special lifting crab units commenced to Wabtec Rail’s high bay Tandem lifting cranes. This included the conversion of the cranes from DC to AC power with a new long travel drive motor gearbox unit, the crab unit and new wiring, and new Downshop Powerfeed system.


The new crab units each have two 16 tonne safe working load, wire rope hoist


units mounted on a crab frame. As UK agents of SWF krantechnik, the company took advantage of the latest high specification equipment in its Nova range, which included a compact low- headroom design, high frequency motors and inverter control on the travel motors as standard. This allows safe and smooth travelling speed and reduced energy consumption. The tandem hoists are also fitted with load summation so that the lift remains level on both hoists. The two cranes allow a tandem lifting capacity of up to 60 tonnes to lift train carriages. Crane maintenance for the industry continued to grow with a new customer,


Unipart Rail, whereby Technical Cranes now services and maintains the company’s cranes and lifting equipment at its Doncaster works. Servicing for electromotive even saw engineers travelling to Germany to maintain a previously installed 16 tonne Goliath crane.


The beginning of 2013 saw the completion of Wabtec Rail’s high bay special lifting crabs and the year remains positive for specialist lifting cranes. Technical Cranes is currently working on early designs for special lifting cranes for the Crossrail project, which it is hoping to deliver towards the end of 2013.
