Sulzer Dowding & Mills offers a variety of services that help optimise a fleet. One of these projects was undertaken in partnership with a railway customer on the Isle of Man - a tramway that has been operational since 1895. The customer wanted to improve the efficiency of its motors and to overhaul years of wear to the bogies. The joint electrical and mechanical repairs were carried out in Sulzer Dowding & Mills’ dedicated Traction repair facility in Birmingham and Sulzer Bootham Engineers’ flagship workshop in York. The electrical repairs focused around the replacement of the classic Phosphor Bronze bush bearings to a standard ball and bearing roller arrangement. This not only acted to improve the efficiency

of the motors but the standardisation also enabled better ease of future overhaul. Additional increases to efficiency were ensured by significant improvements to the armature field coil insulation. The Class B insulation, consisting of mainly cotton, was replaced and upgraded to modern Class H insulation.

Complete overhaul Additionally, the commutators were very worn. Sulzer Dowding & Mills, in Birmingham, was able to manufacture new commutators in-house and fit them. These repair services enabled a complete overhaul of the motor sets to ensure efficient and smooth running for many years to come.
