Benefits of automatic emergency lighting testing

HARVARD ENGINEERING HAS teamed up with LED street sign manufacturer, One2See Signs, to provide local authorities across the UK with a solution that allows them to totally control and monitor LED road signs. The partnership will see Harvard’s wireless monitoring and control system, LeafNut, being installed alongside One2See Signs’ internally illu- minated LED signs.

The new solution will give local authorities the ability to save energy and carbon emis- sions by accurately timed switching on and off, as well as being able to remotely manage lighting schedules and inven- tory. In addition, there will be a reduction in night scouting costs due to LeafNut’s report- ing feature, which can accu- rately predict lamp failure. The controllable signs have already been successfully tri- alled by Westminster City Council - one of the first UK local authorities to install LeafNut street lighting.

TODAY, BUILDING OWNERS and responsible per- sons must be able to prove that their emergency light- ing systems work correctly and must maintain them in full working order. To achieve this, they must test to prove that the emergency lighting works properly. ICEL, the emergency lighting part of the Lighting Industry Association (LIA), has emphasised that auto- matic testing can be more cost effective and reliable than manual testing, and also provides peace of mind. The occupants of commercial and industrial buildings must, under Fire Safety legislation, be safe at all times. Virtually all such buildings will therefore need emergency lighting schemes that are fit for purpose in protecting them and their occu- pants if an emergency occurs.

Automatic testing of emergency lighting is the best way to meet Fire Safety Order obligations, and it will

reduce the burden of testing emergency lighting installations. ICEL believes that Automatic Test Systems (ATS) are the best way of ensuring compli- ance with the required periodic testing and mainte- nance requirements. Full details of ICEL’s recommendations can be seen at

Lighting project saves Londis £17,000

A LONDIS CONVENIENCE store in Darlington is slashing its energy bills by around 63% following a lighting upgrade by MHA Lighting. MHA Lighting replaced traditional fluorescents throughout the shop

floor, back office and post office areas with a selection of its TiLite fit- tings. The lighting system is low maintenance and will run for 60,000 hours of continuous use. With the store’s 15 hour a day operation the lights will not need replacing for eleven years, making additional sav- ings on maintenance costs of £205 per year - a saving of £2,255 over the product’s lifetime. Retro-fit helps school upgrade

SCOTT-BROADWOOD CHURCH of England School in Ockley and Capel has success- fully cut its lighting energy consumption by 50% as a result of a project to replace its old fluorescent lamps with energy efficient equivalents using the retro-fit converter device, ‘Save It Easy’ from Energys Group.

As well as having a place on the curriculum at the school, saving energy and minimising waste are also central to how the school is run.

However, often changes in work group patterns are not automatically followed by changes in light- ing. In fact, the efficiencies made by altering work patterns can be cancelled out by neglecting to opti- mise lighting, which can in turn result in unneces- sarily high energy costs, reduces productivity


“There remains a great contrast between the willing- ness of companies to embrace flexible working patterns and their understanding of the need to match this with corresponding changes to the lighting,” said Jason Ng, marketing communications specialist at Ex-Or. Comprehensive energy audits, servicing and maintenance services are now available from Ex-Or to help companies achieve optimum efficiency from their lighting system. “We can carry out a full energy audit of a building’s lighting control system, including a review of lumi- naires and lighting levels using CIBSE guidelines, and also identify uncontrolled lit areas,” said Ng. As a result of the audit a number of measures can be put in place to improve the energy performance of the lighting control systems. These could include a simple retro-fit of control equipment and/or luminaire conversion and an upgrade to controllable units.

The school discovered that energy efficient T5 lamps are incompatible with older style fittings, so looked into replac- ing all of the light fittings across the school’s two sites with brand new fittings. However, this would have proved very costly and disrup- tive. As an alternative the school turned to the Save It Easy converters from Energys which enabled the new energy efficient lamps to be slotted into the existing light fittings. In all, 312 lamps were con- verted to new generation T5 equivalents - 163 on the school’s Ockley site and 149 on its Capel campus.
