Emma McClelland discovers Armathwaite Hall; the ultimate destination for a luxurious spa break in heart-breakingly beautiful surroundings

fter a hectic festive period full of family commitments and a slightly anti-climactic start to the New Year, my partner and I were feeling


a little jaded. We were looking forward to our trip to the Lake District, and Armathwaite Hall not only fulfilled our expectations but surpassed them too! After a warm reception, our bags were promptly taken to our room by the porter, who made sure that we had everything we needed before leaving us to unpack. Our Deluxe Room, with its view over the courtyard, was a world away from the generic style that can be found in the bedrooms of some modern chain hotels. Instead, it was grand and homely, blending the traditional stately home style of the building with modern conveniences. my partner did and watch Sky Sports from the bath; after all, there is a television built into the bathroom wall! After unpacking, we made our way down to the hotel’s award-winning spa in our robes and slippers to sample some treatments from the spa’s menu. We were taken to a waiting room like no other; two semi-circular seating areas arched around a cylindrical fire pit in the centre. Tere, we were taken to treatment rooms by two of the spa’s therapists. I had chosen the Just Be Lomi Lomi Massage, a traditional Hawaiian treatment that focuses on each side of the body in turn. Te combination of ancient healing traditions and amazing organic oils slowly pulled me into a deep state of relaxation. At one point, I felt so tranquil that I even fell asleep! As the treatment came to an end, I was asked to choose an ‘inspiration card’ from a pack. Each one contained some positive life advice and
