ELECTRO REVIEWS

been smashing more discerning dancefloors for the past few years. This lightweight pop single, based around a piano and vocal that sounds like something from Top Of The Pops from the ‘70s, falls between so many stools that it can’t stand up for itself.

Privoxy

Games & Names Downtime 7.0

This double-header is the kind of racket that, had it been released on Ed Banger four or five years ago, may have made Privoxy something of an overnight sensation. As it is, both tracks would make solid additions to any warm-up set looking to give a little excitement and noise to a party that has yet to start, and also give a hint of something that might develop its own style.

The Beatfreakz Sharooz

Fflash/Hyph GND

9.0

Sharooz is the label boss of La Bombe and this double- header sees him on the label of the moment, GND. ‘Fflash’ is a jittery and jumpy series of noisy explosions with a hefty kick, whilst ‘Hyph’ is based around a rising bassline backed up with housey stabs which blows up into a massive anthem-style clarion call to dance. Taken together, they make for a fantastic double A-side and a no-brainer for single of the month.

Applescal

Boys Atomnation 7.0

Applescal is a Dutch producer who has eschewed the hardcore nonsense that seems to suck up the entirety of his compatriots in their national music scene. Instead, he creates swirling atmosphonica that has a lush lucidity. This is from the album ‘Dreaming In Key’ which is out in 2013, and if the other 10 tracks are of the same kind of quality, then it is going to be something very special indeed.

radio-friendly tracks from new album ‘Out Of The Black’. If you’re a fan of previous singles, such as ‘Yeah’ and ‘Jeffer’, you’ll know what to expect here, at what is definitely the more accessible end of Alex Rihda’s unique dancefloor oeuvre, leaning gracefully towards the more electro side of his output rather than his harder- edged Berlin techno.

Channel X My 3 Wishes (Doctor Dru

Remix) DJ Voice 6.0

A straight four-to-the-floor underpins most of the length of Doctor Dru’s remix of this Channel X tune from the summer of 2012, and it lays down a solid basis for the openly funky synth bassline and spacey vocal snippets. The slightly bland washes give it a smoother edge where something a little harder could perhaps be used to good effect, but the breakdown more than makes up for that.

Fake Blood

All In The Blink Different Recordings 4.0

Theo Keating’s Fake Blood output has been eclectic in a great way, but now he throws quite a wobbler for those who might be fans of the bottom-end boomers that have

Game Over EP Exclusive Recordings/Kontor Media 6.0

This is the kind of squelchy-style electro buzzy house business with a repeated “put your hands up” refrain, that you kind of imagine doing the job pretty well at a Las Vegas pool party of the type frequented by cavorting tanned Adoni of both sexes. As to its worth for a set on a Thursday night in a rainy British town, well, your guess is as good as mine.

TJH87

Break Away Kicks! La Valigetta 7.0

TJH87 are a Finnish electronic music duo made up of Timo Juuti and Hector 87, and La Valigetta is an Italian-based label. So therefore, it stands to reason that ‘Break Away Kicks!’ should turn out to be a big slab of prime-time French Touch that is so ‘Discovery’-era Daft Punk that it almost hurts. As accomplished as it is, the fact it is so derivative ultimately does it no favours.

Vitalic

Stamina Different Recordings 7.0

I found Vitalic’s recent new album ‘Rave Age’ to be a little underwhelming, due to the sum of its parts not really taking shape and making it into something with the feel of a collection that demanded repeated listens. Tracks like new single ‘Stamina’ work far better in isolation, and although the punky electro mix on offer isn’t pushing any boundaries, it makes for a fun five minutes or so.

Chagi Rock This Club

(Original Club Mix) Spinnin Star Music 6.0

A little Italo piano, some cheesy big room- isms and a lot of dirty bass make the debut from Chagai Shiller a bit of a dog’s dinner, but one with promise.

Diva

Paris Stabbing New Kanada Recordings 6.0

Atmospheric and spacey with an insistent edge, this is an intriguing mix that sounds like an ambient track made in a dark basement.

QUICKIES Eli & Fur

Tonight NYX 7.0

Produced by Roman Rappak from Breton, ‘Tonight’ is a decent debut by the two 20-somethings who already have DJ sets at Glade and Glastonbury under their belts.

Rubix

Beat Down White Horse Records 7.0

Rubix is James Hancock Charliestarr, and this noisy rocker owes a little to the ubiquitous rumblings of Skrillex whilst also having enough originality to stand on its own two feet.
