David Ward brought a flat car load of flat cars and coil cars, displaying them on a live-steam- size model flat used as a tie-down training aid. The steel plates on CW6011 are pieces of brass sheet stock cut to size and chemically blackened for the base color and texture, then sprayed with Testors Gun Metal mixed with CSX Blue. The rust was done with MIG Produc- tions powders sifted onto puddles of alcohol and left to dry. Note the J-hooks securing the load; they are etched brass with .020″ holes and wire simulating the threaded rod. These are, in turn, soldered to shim brass strips for strapping. The training aid’s J-hooks show in the photo. The re-bar load has lengths of bundled scale 2″ bronze wire on a modified log car, and the coils in KCS 720020 are bushings from the little drawers at a hardware store. In this case the steel straps are simulated with line-o-tape® brand self-stick pinstriping tape for au- tomotive use. It is shiny, black, paintable and .031″ wide; the red “crimps” are dots of paint.
