I had originally planned on passenger service being done with B&M RDC’s. During this past winter I began working on pas- senger cars. They quickly became a small fleet, so now the plan is to use traditional heavweight cars. I did not have a lot of room for struc-


tures once I had the tracks laid out, but I did want to include some of the build- ings found near the station on Railroad Row. Behind the White River Junction station there actually stood a longer freight house that could have been in- cluded in the scene if room was avail- able, but I really liked the looks of the four structures that were located just north of the station: the Twin State Fruit Co., the CV section house, White


To get a feel for how things would go to- gether and what the scene would look like, the author mocked up the buildings using photocopies of plans and photos. These photos (left) show the progression of the scene with the station and building flats.


River Paper, and Renehan and Ackers Lumber. All the structures found near the station would be done with build- ing flats other than the Central Ver- mont section house, which was small enough to be fully modeled. Some structures needed to be reduced in size to make the scene fit together right. All the buildings began as enlarged photo- copied photos or paper and cardstock mock-ups; they were used until the fin- ished buildings were in place. From these I made drawings that could be used for scratchbuilding since, of course, no kits were available for them. There wasn’t much room between


the rear staging track and the main- line where two other staging tracks are also located. I had just enough space to squeeze in a small version of the White River Junction station. Modeling the building became a selective compres- sion project. The station scene also in- cludes the unique ball signal that was once located on the Boston & Maine side. The foreground was left clear of structures for better viewing. I did add two staging tracks to the foreground to hold extra equipment. They are not ac- tually attached to the rest of the track- age (see sidebar).


White River Junction station I had seen an HO scale model of the


Junction station at a Central Vermont Historical Society convention, and I had nowhere near the space for such a structure. I used photocopies made from the station plans found in a past
