CP overhead ice bunker refrigera- tor car: HO scale Mfd., by True Line Trains, 445 Edge-
ley Blvd, Unit 1, Concord, Ontario, Can- ada, L4K 4G1;
www.truelinetrains. ca. The latest model available from True
Line Trains is a ready-to-run model of an overhead-bunker ice refrigerator car owned and operated by the Canadi- an Pacific Railway and the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. Overhead-bunker refrigerator cars were more popular with Canadian rail-
ways than with American lines. Specif- ically, Canadian problems in perish- able shipments arose from economic and operational conditions in a country of vast distances, sparse population and a wide range of climatic conditions from 100 degrees Fahrenheit in sum- mer to minus 40 in winter. These dic- tated an all-purpose refrigerator car which could be heated or cooled to any desired temperature at any time. In this respect Canadian practice differed from that in the United States where specialized refrigerator cars shuffled between specific populated areas. In the U.S. the majority of refrigerator cars were specially built, owned and maintained by private companies for single-purpose perishable commodities such as produce, dairy, fish, meat or beer. In Canada reefers were railway- owned.
Although there were early experi-
ments with overhead ice bunkers prior to about 1939, Canadian railways ex- clusively employed end-bunker refrig- erator cars. As the traffic volume in- creased, it became clear that the end-bunker car was not satisfactory in part because the spatial temperature variations could be as large as 20 de- grees Fahrenheit. Research carried out during the 1930’s by the CN, CP, Na- tional Research Council of Canada and
