builders: National Steel Car, Marine Industries Limited, CP’s Angus shops, CN’s Point St. Charles shops, CN’s Transcona shops and Pacific Car & Foundry. Over 6,400 cars in total were built. From 1939 until 1959 all refrig- erator cars built new in Canada were of the overhead-bunker type. Their owners were CN, CP, Pacific Great Eastern and CN’s subsidiary Grand Trunk Western. There were numerous variations

over the years of production, including running boards, end styles, ladders, brake wheel type, tack board location, orientation of roof hatch opening, cubic capacity and load limit. CN and CP each had both hinged-door versions and plug-door versions. There were many physical differences between the CN and CP cars. The CN and CP also ordered express refrigerator versions for operation in passenger trains. CP reefers built prior to 1948 were delivered with CANADIAN PACIFIC in one line above the car number left of the doors. Cars completed from 1948 to 1950 carried the “Spans-the-World” herald to the right of the doors. Cars delivered from 1950 to 1956 carried the stepped CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY let- tering right of the doors. The script let- tering was applied starting in 1964. It is unlikely that the CP Multi-mark scheme of 1969 was ever applied to any of these reefers. During the war in 1943 all 160 CP overhead-bunker cars then in service were assigned to transporting Wilt- shire sides of pork from Alberta and Saskatchewan to Halifax for export to feed wartime Britain. Re-icing was not required in transit during the seven-

day, 2,300 mile trips, including some during August. On their return trips to the west, the reefers likely carried frozen fish. After the war overhead- bunker cars carried many types of sea- sonable perishables including fruit, vegetables, canned goods, fish and meat. Apples, peaches, cherries and grapes were shipped from the Niagara Peninsula and the Okanagan Valley; apples from the Annapolis Valley, potatoes from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, fishery products from both coasts and inland lakes, frozen meat from packing plants. Ship- ments were carried to domestic desti- nations and for export to many U.S. destinations, including New York, Boston, New Jersey, Baltimore and Texas. Blocks of the reefers were com- mon in New England loaded with pota- toes from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. In 1950 the following tonnage originated on the CP system: potatoes (206k), fruit (176k), dressed meats (111k), vegetables (30k), fish (12k). In 1958 CP operated icing stations at

46 locations on its 17,000-mile system, while CN operated icing stations at 99 locations on its 22,500-mile system. As overhead-bunker reefers were built

and put in service, CP retired older steel- underframe, end-bunker reefers. In June, 1960, CP had 2,561 overhead- bunker reefers, or 54 percent of its total 4,725 freight reefers then in service. Of the total 3,102 CP overhead-

bunker freight reefers built, the num- bers in service were: April 4, 1942 (249), April 4, 1951 (1,985), April 4, 1958 (3,073), July 7, 1965 (1,503), Jan- uary 1, 1972 (217), January 1, 1978 (42) and October, 1981 (0).
