a metal-lined air space or flue in the car walls. Due to the cars having these hollow walls with the cold refrigerant passing down through them the lading could be placed tightly against the side walls. To function as all-purpose cars, they were equipped with meat rails to hang meat when required. To obtain full advantage of the car in

all seasons each car was equipped with an underslung charcoal heater in which an anti-freeze solution was heat- ed to circulate through copper coils above the floor and below the floor racks via convection, then return to the heater. As such, all the car’s interior space was available for loading when shipments were under heater protec- tion. These permanent heaters were larger and more reliable than the portable style heaters sometimes placed inside end-bunker cars. Also, being external to the car, there was no danger of poisonous fumes to person- nel working inside the cars. Each car was equipped with a “liq- uidometer” indicator on its exterior in- dicating the inside temperatures at the top and bottom of the lading. With con- siderable temperature variation over a vast geography, it was desirable to re- ice cars in accordance with the interior temperature rather than the outside temperature. Using the indicators, cars could be re-iced only when neces- sary based on the indicator readings rather than at regular intervals re- gardless of need, as was the practice with end bunker cars. Certain perish- able commodities had specific rules. Regulations specified targets such as “keep bottom inside temperature as near as possible to the following: toma- toes 46, potatoes and beverages 40, ap-

ples and oranges 33, fresh and cured meats 32, etc.” As the ice was located overhead it furnished maximum refrig- eration until it was all gone, so there was no need to have cars arrive at des- tinations with the tanks full. Due to the ice refrigerant being over-

head, the cars were approximately sev- en feet longer inside. It was not neces- sary to leave a space at doorways to permit air circulation, so every square inch of the interior was available for lading, the only limitation being that some commodities, owing to their frag- ile nature or fragile construction of their containers, could not be loaded too high. The average loading of end-bunker

cars was about 35,000 pounds, while overhead-bunker cars were typically loaded to 60,000 to 89,000 pounds. In addition, testing showed that the re- frigeration cost for an overhead- bunker car was about half that of an end-bunker car because the former re- quired much less re-icing en route. Disadvantages of the car were greater initial cost and heavier weight. The light weight of the car was 62,100 pounds versus 56,000 pounds for an end-bunker car. These were mitigated by savings over long term operation. These cars had the AAR classifica-

tion RAMH indicating brine-tank re- frigerator cars for crushed ice and salt, equipped with beef rails and a heater. Extensive experimentation and test-

ing from 1931 through 1940 showed the overhead iced cars were superior to the end-bunker cars. Convinced of the overhead-bunker design’s suitability as an all-purpose refrigerator car, the CN and CP proceeded to place 42 or- ders over 23 years with six car
