True Line Trains has announced a CN version of the overhead-bunker reefer which is physically different with an overhanging roof, riveted improved Dreadnaught ends and hinged doors. It has also announced models of CN and CP express versions of the overhead- bunker reefer that were used in passen- ger trains. This is the first plastic model of a CP overhead-bunker reefer. Athearn has been one of those manu- facturers that seems to have been around forever. When I first started out in the hobby I had Athearn “blue box” engines and cars. Fortunately for modelers Athearn has constantly im- proved their product and evolved with the times. Today Athearn produces some of the best quality model equip- ment offered. Not only is the quality


there, but the models are accurate rep- resentations of their prototypes, right down to the unique details that each railroad was noted for.


When the announcement was made


for the Athearn Genesis Erie Lack- awanna GP9’s I was immediately ex- cited. All of the other Genesis equip- ment I own are top notch models. I knew that these GP9’s would have to be good. They were, and they are. At- hearn is offering the Erie Lackawanna GP9’s in four road numbers. They are offered as d.c. models without sound or as DCC models with Soundtraxx Tsunami sound.


The Erie Lackawanna GP9’s were few in number. Only six were pur- chased by the Erie Railroad in 1956. These units survived through the merger of the Erie and the Lackawan- na and wore the paint scheme of the new road. In that, the engines were very similar to the GP7, which the Erie Lackawanna had in much greater numbers. The GP9’s were quipped with 16-cylinder EMD 567C prime movers which put out 1,750 horsepow- er, an increase of 500 over the GP7. As previously mentioned, the At-
