The secret was not to treat diesels as simple re- placements for steam power, but to ad- just scheduling, maintenance and many other aspects of the railway’s operations to make the best use of the flexibility and interchangeability of the new type of locomotive. These sorts of changes and challenges took a while to mature on the railway, but they soon trans- formed Canadian National as they did other major railroads in North America. The book is nicely designed and pre-
sented with clear, easy-to-read type, and carefully reproduced photos. In all there are about 270 black and white and color pictures illustrating every aspect of the story. The color photos present the many variations in CN colors over the years, and also show well how these engines weathered in service. The hardcover binding is sturdy and the jacket attrac- tive, making the book a welcome addition to anyone’s collection. Adding consider- ably to its value as a reference, the book is fully referenced and includes an index. There are many roster shots of locomo-

tives, illustrating differences in models and modifications. As well there are many fine pictures of the locomotives at work in yards, terminals and on the road with passenger and freight trains. Some of my favorites, and ones that would
make great modeling subjects, are Jim Shaughnessy’s classic pictures of the Prince Edward Island mixed trains and operations in the 1950’s when GE 70-ton- ners were in use on these rural and very picturesque lines. I also have a soft spot for CN’s GE 44-tonners that were used as yard engines and as light road-switchers in the early days of dieselization. Anyone modeling the CNR’s vast em-
pire or its diesels in the era of F units, FA’s, and C-Liners, or who models yards with Alco, MLW or GM switchers will find a great deal of useful and interesting information in this book. The presenta- tion of the story of the dieselization process may not change the details of a model, but it certainly expands our un- derstanding of this complex and difficult task, and the impact it had on the rail- way and the people who worked for it. That too, in perhaps a more subtle way, sets the stage for interpretative modeling and beyond that, garnering a better un- derstanding this important part of rail- roading and technological history. Many hours have gone into the re-
search, writing, design and production of this book, and it shows in the quality publication that the authors and the CNRHS have produced. It will un- doubtedly remain a fundamental refer- ence for many years to come, and I look forward to its companion volume. Don’t miss it.–ROBERT D. TURNER
