main diesel builders (and their Canadian subsidiaries): Alco (Montreal Locomotive Works), General Motors (General Motors Diesel), and Fairbanks-Morse (Canadian Locomotive Company). Purchases of freight and passenger units went to all builders, but it soon became clear to CN management that the F-M offerings were more expensive and less reliable, and General Motors, as it did on most other railroads, eventually won the largest share of the market. Wartime specializa- tion had a long time impact with Alco having a large share of the switcher or- ders and GM developing its road locomo- tives. The result was that CN’s first–gen- eration diesel roster was varied and complicated, and interesting combina- tions of power on freight and passenger trains became common. Matched sets of diesels did appear of course, but the loco- motives of different builders could be well mixed at the front of trains. By about 1950, Canadian National
was fully committed to dieselization as fast as it could be accomplished but without the undue waste of retiring to soon well maintained modern steam equipment. In the end, the goal of retir- ing steam came faster than originally anticipated and was completed in 1960. One of the reasons was that the new diesels were more efficient than antici-
