Linatex screen technology now manufactured in India
Weir Minerals India (WMI) has completed the assembly of its fi rst Linatex screen at its facility in Bangalore. This is an important development in WMI’s growth strategy, as it pursues new product introductions for the local market. It also opens up the opportunity for Weir Minerals India to support global requirements. The WMI team estimates domestic market potential for the product at over INR 490m, which includes general industry, minerals & mining and sand & dredge industry. Screen media has an additional market size of INR 90m, taking the total market size to INR 580m. The product development project started in December 2011, when the India team collaborated with the Design Centre of Origin
(DCO) for screens in South Africa and the DCO for screen media in the US. A cross functional India team received training and knowledge on the product and its development. Subsequently, the team designed six sizes of media/panels. The mold of the screen media for the pilot screen is ready and the team began to produce the screen media in Bangalore last month.
The team has also developed the capability
to start production of Velcro Dewatering (VD) screens. The production of the screens will take place in its new Bangalore facility, which was inaugurated in December 2011 by Keith Cochrane, Group CEO. The team has identifi ed and developed local vendors for full scale production.
GEHO pumps rise to the challenge of major copper pipeline project
It’s the fi rst pipeline in the world which ends at a higher elevation than where
it started. It also passes through the Andean mountains, at altitudes of 3600-4600 metres above sea level. This means the pumps need a high power rating and also additional cooling provisions. But the remote location means no water is available and the thin air makes cooling provisions even more diffi cult. These are the engineering challenges
facing Weir Minerals Netherlands’ GEHO pumps, selected for the Las Bambas copper mine pipeline project in Southern Peru. The pipeline will run for 215km and requires four
pump stations, each with two GEHO piston diaphragm pumps. Weir engineers have set up a unique cooling system for Las Bambas to deal with the severe conditions. The pumps are proven in other copper concentrate pipeline operations, which gave confi dence to the project developers Xtrata Copper and Bechtel and the pipeline designer, Ausenco PSI. Weir Minerals Netherlands is the only piston diaphragm pump manufacturer with experience in multi-pump station operations at high- abrasion copper concentrate pipelines in mountainous areas.
South Korean certifi cation secures key project
Weir Power & Industrial France
recently acquired Korean Gas Safety (KGS) certifi cation, which helped to secure a sizeable project with Air Liquide France. The certifi cation approves the Sarasin- RSBD product line for use within the growing South Korean market.
