WEIRBULLETIN | JULY 2012 SAFETY MINERALS OIL & GAS POWER & INDUSTRIAL

Setting new standards for environment, health and safety (EHS) practice

In the last edition of the Bulletin, director of operations support and development, Gavin Nicol, explained the background and intention behind the rollout of the Weir EHS system. But that’s just one part of a wider proactive framework which, as Gavin explains, will underpin the Group’s EHS direction in the coming years.

Q: Why is this happening? Is the Group’s EHS performance poor? A: No, the Group has good lost time incident performance when benchmarked externally. There is also some very good practice around the business. This is about a proactive raising of the bar to introduce consistent, stretching internal standards that continually exceed industry norms. That should be good news for all of us, as colleagues and managers. It also sends a clear message externally that Weir is a business that puts its people fi rst.

Q: So what is going to change in existing EHS practice around the Group? A: We’ve set out a ‘roadmap’ for our environment, health and safety practices across the Group. The aim is to have consistent, world class performance and we have identifi ed fi ve key workstreams to make progress on over the next three years.

Q: What are the fi ve priorities? A: These are corporate responsibility – establishing a chain of accountability and responsibility in our duty of care to colleagues, customers and communities from the CEO throughout the wider Group; the development, implementation and evolution of the Weir EHS system, which we covered in the last Bulletin; the introduction of a Weir behavioural safety system which will develop and defi ne the culture and behaviour expected in our EHS approach; collaboration and standardisation – basically, how do we

share best practice around the Group and ensure that there is no variation in standards and practice whether you work in Artarmon, Alrode or Alloa. The fi nal workstream is a focus on core risk initiatives – addressing the most common risk areas such as hand and fi nger injury.

Q: How will these affect me? A: In the broadest terms, I believe the implementation of the roadmap will make Weir one of the safest businesses in the world to work for and the actions fl owing from the roadmap are not about introducing additional workload. Depending on your role or the business you work in, it may mean training in core risk areas or something like adopting best practice approaches from around the Group. But divisional EHS champions will help to develop detailed plans for individual businesses to focus on.

Q: How will we know when we’ve completed this EHS journey? A: This is a never ending journey! EHS issues require constant focus to ensure standards remain high. In terms of the roadmap, we are already underway with the workstreams and the aim is to have the key elements of the EHS framework in place by the end of 2014. Between now and then there will be a process of delivery and rollout which will engage everyone around the Group in one way or another. Progress and goals will be monitored by the EHS Excellence Committee to ensure the timetable is met. Clearly, we’ll keep all colleagues informed along the way.
