FROM SCOT SMITH DIVISIONAL MANAGING DIRECTOR, WEIR MINERALS
A rock solid future
As he prepares to leave the Group, Scot Smith is optimistic about the future of Weir Minerals
Mining markets offer us a glimpse into the future. The ores that Weir Minerals equipment helps to process and produce are the raw materials upon which the world depends for construction, urbanisation and consumer goods - everything from automobiles to refrigerators. They offer insights into how countries develop and people live their lives. That’s why I can feel optimistic about the future for Weir Minerals. Population growth and rising living standards in emerging nations will ensure demand for fi nite resources such as metals increases in the years ahead. We have developed a business that is well positioned to benefi t through superior equipment; a product range that has successfully grown from a strong pump platform; excellent operations around the world and an unrivalled service footprint amongst our industry peers. We announced last month the ambitions for the division
to double 2011 profi ts by 2016 – a stretching target, but one that we should be confi dent of achieving with
our large installed base of equipment and outstanding aftermarket offering which allows us to capture a strong share of support, service and spares opportunities. We also have an outstanding team to ensure we achieve this ambition, from the guys on the frontline delivering support at the mine site, to our team in the laboratories keeping our technology position ahead of the competition. Shortly, I’ll leave the business after over ten years as
divisional managing director of Weir Minerals. What the team has done in that time has been excellent – and the future looks pretty exciting too.

David Eustace creates Weir portfolio
Towards the end of 2011, in celebration of the Weir Group’s 140th anniversary, renowned photographer David Eustace was commissioned to produce a portfolio of images giving a snapshot of our products, plants and people. Over a three week period David visited sites in Jundiaí, Brasil; Santiago in Chile and Fort Worth, Texas USA to compile the body of work. Speaking about the project David
said, “Compiling this portfolio I became increasingly aware of a delicacy to be found in such heavy industry. There appeared to
be an incredible gentleness of colour and an attention to detail and precision that highlighted this delicacy. Stepping back I uncovered a veritable art gallery within some of the toughest environments.” The front cover of this edition of the Bulletin and pages 2 & 3 feature two of David’s striking photographs. The rest of the collection will be made available for viewing on the Global Intranet over the coming months. Special thanks go to all Weir staff (and models!) in Brasil, Chile and Fort Worth.
