Engineering excellence – starting them young!

Outstanding achievement award for CEO

One of Scotland’s most prestigious business awards was collected by Weir Group CEO Keith Cochrane. The Scottish Business Achievement Award is given to a leader of a business that really stands out from the crowd as an example of Scottish corporate leadership as well as demonstrating personal attributes which manifest themselves in the success of the business.

Keith was presented with the award by HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony in Edinburgh in May.

Interest in careers in engineering and manufacturing is growing and Weir is playing its part by running a schools competition in conjunction with Scottish Engineering. The pilot project targeted 16 schools

from across Scotland to participate by presenting on the theme of “The Importance of Engineering in Scotland.”

All of the schools in the pilot put in considerable effort and submitted good pieces of work with the winners, six pupils from Dunblane High School, presenting their entry to the group executive team last month and receiving a £4000 prize. Plans are in place to expand the

competition next year to include all Scottish secondary schools.

Celebrating success

Some outstanding business performances from around the Group were recognised at this year’s Group Conference. The awards were presented by chairman, Lord Smith of Kelvin, in the splendid and historic surroundings of Stirling Castle. The Chairman’s award for Most

Hydro, another comparative newcomer, was commended. The Chief Executive’s Award for Commercial Achievement went to Weir Minerals Europe who achieved signifi cant increases in input, output and profi ts. All the more impressive given that this performance was delivered with little capital investment. The G & J award for innovation went to Weir Minerals South America for the slurry mechanical seal. The seal is designed

to reduce and eliminate the consumption of seal water at pumps operating in remote or desert areas. The Weir seal is the only one that operates with abrasive slurries, perfectly meeting the needs of the minerals markets for which it is intended. Finally, the G & J award for collaboration went to the Oil & Gas Forum where a cross- divisional team continues to create great new products for oil and gas markets.
