Potential refers to understanding who I am, and what I can do and want to become. It is also about building realistic expectations regarding myself and what type of career I can pursue. This means just-in-time career and vocational guidance. Opportunities encompass equipping the youth through training, education and experience to become what they want and can be; obtaining the necessary experience to gain initial entry into the world of work, like internships and learnerships; the creation of decent job opportunities; easy access to financing so that they can start up their own business (seed money); making it easy to set up their own business and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities; and building close symbiotic partnerships between small and big businesses.

“Without a dream, a vision – our spearhead into the future – our youth will not believe in themselves or see a future for themselves.”

Prof Theo H Veldsman 44 Management Today | June 2012

If I were President of our beautiful country with its rich diversity, demonstrating leadership that makes a real difference, how would I make the above a reality? Firstly, I would mobilise stakeholders at all levels to buy into and commit to a shared destiny, especially investing into our youth as being THE investment in our country’s future. Secondly, I would engender a country- wide excitement and hope through an envisioned future with our stakeholders for our country which would motivate our youth: there is a future which holds promise for all, equally unleashing boundless positive energy. Without a dream, a vision – our spearhead into the future – our youth will not believe in themselves or see a future for themselves.

Thirdly, I will enable a process of crafting a country strategy with practical implementation initiatives to bring together potential and opportunities synergistically to make our vision a reality for our youth. Here I believe the National Planning Commission is a move in the right direction but how do we make their proposals relevant to, and in-the-face-of, our youth? Fourthly, I would espouse, embed and personally live an inspirational set of worthy and meaningful values and beliefs which must direct and guide us as a country and our youth as we journey into the future. Yes, an unconditional, uncompromising culture of ethical and excellence infusing all of us. Fifthly, I would foster an on- going national dialogue and learning about how we are effectively managing the critical triangle of potential, opportunities and future and celebrating our successes visibly in this space.”
