“We at TT100 and Da Vinci are personally excited as this is a catalyst for developing a new cadre of young South Africans, who through their exposure to some of South Africa’s finest technology organisations will be able to acquire a set of skills and workplace experience, which will empower them to make a meaningful contribution to SA economic growth.”

they have earned during their studies, so that they will begin to think in enterprising ways about the possibility of establishing their own businesses. We plan to deliver a group of people who will form part of the next generation of entrepreneurs and technology innovators.

Dear graduates, I hope you do not keep this as a secret. I urge you to talk to other young people about this opportunity. I challenge each of you to succeed. When you do, we can increase the pool of interns to a 100 graduates, then 200 and hopefully a 1 000 one day. It really depends on how you do this year. It is vital that you see this as an opportunity which you need to take up the responsibility for. Realise that among the millions who do not have access to a programme such as this, you are very fortunate to be here today. Make good on what you have been given through this programme,” Minister Pandor commented.

Prof Marcus (pictured above) was personally involved in the orientation programme for the selected graduates that spanned five days. “My reaction upon reflecting on this orientation week is that at least three myths have been shattered. Firstly is the myth that Government Departments are incapable of responding to major challenges.

Our interaction with the DST on this particular programme has been nothing but spectacular. Minister Pandor and her team have responded with real, serious advice, commitment and a wiliness to work with us to make this programme happen. The second myth shattered is that Industry in South Africa is not interested in the promotion of this country. The response from some of our TT100 companies to create these internship opportunities has been phenomenal. And the third shattered myth is that all young South Africans are lazy and arrogant. I firmly believe that the graduates that we have recruited for this programme is indicative of the talent and hope that this country has to offer.

If ever there was a programme that can make a significant contribution, the DST internship programme will become a role model for other South African government departments” Marcus concluded.
