The Honourable Minister Naledi Pandor accepts a gift from the interns


The launch, held at the Da Vinci Institute in Modderfontein, was officiated by the Minister of Science and Technology, the Honourable Naledi Pandor.


“I want to say a humble and grateful thank you


to Prof Roy Marcus, Chairman of Da Vinci, and his team, for giving life to this very important initiative. A part of my department’s responsibility is to respond to the challenge of high levels of unemployment amongst the youth in our country. I have always been horrified by the figures on unemployed graduates in South Africa. I was especially concerned that young people in South Africa should not begin to doubt that there are opportunities within the science field. I had to challenge the realities that they may have been experiencing. This internship programme is looking at an innovative approach to resolve this


I am grateful for this triple helix that has been created between Government, Industry and Higher Education. I believe this programme will be replicated elsewhere because of its potential for success. I keep on reminding people that Government cannot do everything. Therefore, the level of success that can be achieved by unifying the right elements such as these is incredible. We are providing an opportunity for young South Africans to learn from the experience of these TT100 companies, acquire work experience while applying the attributes that

challenge. But this is just the first programme of its nature that DST is involved in. Prof Marcus and his team have inspired me to create more programmes like this in partnership with the Da Vinci Institute.
