Coaching young leadership and entrepreneurial potential: evolving and emerging leaders

ike any well composed symphony, every company and organisation has to have the right people mix; such an
‘orchestra’ might consist of very different instruments, but its sum total produces a sound that is ‘in agreement’. There have to be dynamic, visionary leaders and detail-orientated managers, but both extremes require a balance of people and relationship skills. Their strategic thinking capacity, world-wise-ness and foresight capacity have to be orchestrated toward strategic roll-out of results. Within this reality, leadership is tasked to ensure the longevity of a company’s legacy beyond the present leadership’s life cycle.
Working with young entrepreneurs, I am constantly called upon to coach on how to shift mind-sets of older leaders who seem to sit and “sum these young ‘okes’ up” with an attitude of, “I wonder if they will deliver the kind of results we expect?” Older leaders assume that older folks are more ‘solid’.
However, age is no longer the issue. Young, dynamic, inexperienced entrepreneurs are delivering amazing results in IT, social media and many more industries. They are out-playing and out-strategising the bigger so-called elite agencies who still use the ‘big bells and whistles’ approach while ignoring African realities.
