Milpark MBA Life Impact Study A significant shift in the student’s
orientation takes place during the arduous MBA journey. The student’s perspective of the world of work and business widens with the achievement of each milestone or module completed. Ultimately, the new paradigm is practically applied when the journey culminates in the production of a dissertation, using appropriate academic register and business-aligned skills to demonstrate the ability to do independent research and to address real-life problems or opportunities within the context of the industry from which the student comes.
In the final analysis, feedback from MBA alumni and private and public industry stakeholders is overwhelmingly positive in terms of the value the MBA programme has added to the individuals and the organisations they serve. Not acknowledging and recognising the value of the MBA and the outstanding work that so many business schools have done and continue to do in empowering and equipping MBAs will be short-sighted in my view.

Earlier this year Finweek commissioned FeedbackRocket to conduct research on the impact of the MBA on the lives of MBA graduates and students at accredited business schools in SA. The information below is from a report that is similar in structure to the main FeedbackRocket Finweek report, but is based only on data from Milpark graduates and current students. The sample of Milpark MBA graduates and students consisted of 180 completed questionnaires and 247 people accessing the survey. There was a 50:50 split between current Milpark MBA students and graduates, with the majority of graduates having completed their MBA within the last 5 years. Why did people do an MBA at Milpark? And did the Milpark MBA meet their expectations in these areas? Despite popular perceptions, career advancement and financial motives were not the main reasons people decided to study an MBA. By far, the main reason for Milpark respondents was the ’Attainment of Business Knowledge’, followed by ‘Improvement in Soft Skills’ and then ‘Financial Motives’. Business knowledge was not only the most popular reason for doing an MBA, but also the one for which Milpark MBA graduates and students were most satisfied. Graduates and students believe that the MBA was very effective in giving them the business knowledge they were seeking. Respondents were particularly surprised at the usefulness and effectiveness of the soft skills they gained during the MBA.
