5. SWEET INDEED – PINEAPPLES & SEA TURTLES! Near the foot of an active volcano which has left the land abundantly rich with minerals, visit an organic pineapple farm to learn how growing and harvesting techniques have evolved over time and to taste the “fruit of kings.” At Costa Flores, follow trails through tropical flowers, foliage and palm trees. This afternoon, board a small canal boat to cruise to Tortuguero National Park, where conservationists are working to preserve the beach nesting sites critical to the survival of the endangered green sea turtle. Trips departing in July and August will head to the beach at night for the possibility of seeing the naturally exciting spectacle of female green turtles emerging from the sea to bury eggs in the black volcanic sand. ECO-TREASURES ARENAL NATIONAL PARK

Located in central Costa Rica, Arenal National Park is spread out over 30,000 acres that preserve eight out of the country’s 12 biological zones. There are two volcanoes here, with cone-shaped Arenal being the most actively known – it’s been smoking since 1968! Weather permitting, you’ll be able to get a close look at this hot- headed local on a cruise across Arenal Lake and on a zip line or an aerial sky tram adventure through the treetops of the jungle!

TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK One of the most varied of all of Costa Rica’s national parks, Tortuguero is renowned for its fabulous array of wildlife. Cruises along its wide-open canals provide opportunities to spot turtles, toucans, giant iguanas and howler monkeys. In summer, the park is one of the world’s largest and most important nesting sites for green sea turtles. Departures July through August will include a trip to the beach at night for a chance to see nesting turtles. Your riverfront lodge, accessible by canal boat, lets you enjoy the wildlife right outside your door, from dawn to dusk!

6. WILD IN TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK Cruise the canals of “Costa Rica’s Amazon,” where wildlife is rich and varied. Keep an eye out for monkeys, amphibians, birds and fish; park residents include tapir, ocelots, jaguars, river otters, grisons, frogs, macaws, toucans and bulldog bats that feed on fish. You’ll also find coconut trees, orchids, heliconias and other abundant tropical flora. Visit the non-profit Caribbean Conservation Corporation, dedicated to addressing the threats that face the endangered green sea turtles, and explore the village of Tortuguero, surrounded by sea and forest. Take an optional canal cruise in the park this afternoon or spend time at leisure at your lodge. Meals BLD
