Tanzania: Serengeti to Zanzibar Wild and wondrous
Experience your own private Africa from tented camps and safari lodges in the most wondrous game reserves in Tanzania, where the circle of life plays out before you in an inspiring natural pageant. The “Big Five” beckons during game drives in open-topped safari vehicles and from a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti... lions lounging under the shade of baobab trees, herds of elephants tenderly caressing their young, leopards lolling on tree branches, buffalo grazing in the grasslands, and rhinos, all brawn and bravado standing their ground... along with always alert wildlife, like giraffes, antelope, zebra and more. Meet the Maasai who thrive in the bush... sample the spices and street food of Zanzibar... and sail a white-masted dhow into the ocean blue.
1. ARRIVE ARUSHA, TANZANIA Tour begins: Mountain Village, Arusha. A transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Mountain Village, Arusha is included. Although most flights land at Kilimanjaro International Airport after the sun has set, thoughts of Ernest Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro will come to mind as you journey the short distance from the airport to your hotel.
2. TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Depart your hotel in safari vehicles for your first game drive. Your destination is prehistoric-looking Tarangire National Park, one of the best parks on the northern circuit to see elephants. Tarangire’s wildlife also includes herds of zebra, jackal, giraffe, gazelle, and buffalo. Enjoy lunch al fresco before an afternoon game drive into a landscape dotted with baobab trees and umbrella-thorn acacias en route to your tented camp. Join us for a welcome reception and dinner by the campfire. Meals BLD
3. TARANGIRE GAME DRIVE Home to over 550 species of birds (one of the highest number of bird species of any world habitat), Tarangire boasts one of the highest concentrations of African wildlife during the dry season. Your open-top safari vehicle provides you with intimate viewing of this natural wilderness, considered one of Africa’s finest, on an exciting morning game drive. Spend the afternoon participating in traditional African activities. Meals BLD
4. LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK Drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a game drive that thrills with great birds of prey and some 300 species of migratory birds. Enjoy lunch at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge, set on an escarpment overlooking the park, then visit a local primary school sponsored by Tauck donations. Continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to Ngorongoro Crater, a wildlife mecca. Your lodge is built on the dormant volcano’s rim, with stunning views of the “lost world” below. Meals BLD
