7. PANDA DELIGHTS

A fabulous day awaits in Chengdu’s northern suburbs at the Panda Breeding Center, devoted to saving the endangered Giant Panda. Not only will you learn about the panda’s characteristics, natural habitat and the efforts under way to encourage breeding, but you will also be able to participate in a feeding – and best of all, snuggle with a baby panda content to relax in your lap as he or she enjoys a bamboo snack. This evening brings the experience of a simmering huoguo (fire pot, literally – or “hot pot”) dinner made to order. You’ll have a choice of broth, noodles and other ingredients – not to mention the level of spiciness – served with an array of dipping sauces. Meals BLD

8. FAST FORWARD TO SHANGHAI

Head to stylish, snappy Shanghai on a flight to China’s eastern coast, where the Yangtze River meets the Pacific Ocean. Consider the city’s historic reputation as a magnet for foreign adventurers and serious social-climbing, then fast forward to a city bursting with soaring high rises and the “Jetson”-like skyline of its financial center in the Pudong District. As in any proper frontier town, however, contrasts remain in the nooks of its street markets, narrow alleyways and traditional Chinese gardens. Your three-night stay begins tonight at the Fairmont Peace Hotel, opened as the Cathay Hotel in 1929 by an owner whose family fortune was made in the opium trade. Meals BLD

9. FUTURE VISIONS & A HISTORY OF THE ARTS You’ll be able to better envision Shanghai in the future, when growth is less of a priority, on a visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, which showcases the city’s master plan for 2020. Next up is The Shanghai Museum, where 5,000 years of Chinese art collections are displayed in an ultra-modern building designed in the image of a traditional bronze ding or cauldron-like vessel. Meals B

10. SHANGHAI’S FRENCH CONNECTION Enjoy a walk through the intimate Old French Concession, a district of low-rise buildings and leafy streets, where quaint and stylish are today’s operative words. Then enjoy browsing the shops along Taikang Road, an area of Shikumen (old stone gate) neighborhoods. Originally built to house local families within the city’s foreign concessions, their narrow streets were once considered the ultimate in over-crowded urban living; today their dwindling numbers are undergoing trendy renewal. 11. JOURNEY HOME Tour ends: Shanghai. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included from the Fairmont Peace Hotel to Shanghai Pudong Int’l Airport; allow a minimum of 3 hours for flight check-in. Meals B

Hear the story of the Xi’an Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses, buried for some 2,000 years until accidentally uncovered.
