NATURE’S PLAYGROUND...

Tiny Costa Rica is big on flora and fauna. With more than half a million living species residing here, it’s among the world’s top 20 countries for biodiversity... and growing...

6. A GENTLE PEÑAS BLANCAS RIVER FLOAT TRIP Take a float trip* down the wildlife-rich Peñas Blancas River; visit a farmer and his family who have lived on the river all their lives, like their ancestors before them, without modern technologies. Return to the resort for an afternoon spent as you please. Swim, play tennis, or choose from optional activities (at additional cost) like horseback riding, rafting, or pampering at the spa. 7. FROM COFFEE BEANS TO GOLD IN SAN JOSÉ Trace the development of Costa Rican gourmet coffee on a guided tour of the Doka Estate coffee plantation on the slopes of Poás Volcano in Alajuela. After lunch, continue on to the capital city of San José. Tonight, our exclusive “Golden Evening” includes a farewell reception and dinner at the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum); situated underground, the museum is home to a dazzling collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts. A COLORFUL KALEIDOSCOPE IN THE SKY...

Between birds and butterflies, Costa Rican airspace is ablaze with color. Candy-striped toucans, scarlet macaws and the aptly named Resplendent Quetzal dazzle sky walkers in cloud forests like Monteverde. The names of the hummingbirds alone – from green-crowned brilliants to purple-throated mountain gems – will evoke smiles! And the butterflies, boldly dressed in electric blue, fiery orange and sunshine yellow, never fail to tickle your fancy!

ON LAND AND WATER... AND IN THE TREES...

Amphibians and reptiles are everywhere in Costa Rica. Frogs with red eyes or “blue jeans” share ponds and leafy homes with lizards, caimans, iguanas, snakes and turtles... eyeing each other with caution lest they become someone’s dinner. But warm-blooded mammals make their presence known, too. You may not spot an elusive jaguar, ocelot or tapir... but you can bet that monkeys, sloths, agoutis or coatis lurk in the trees overhead!

AND DON’T FORGET THE FLORA...

Costa Rica means “rich coast”... so expect to find yourself enveloped by plants of every description, each well-adapted to its ecosystem... from flowering plants like heliconia and orchids, to a plethora of ferns, to towering ceiba trees, to moss and lichens hugging the forest floor.
