MANGROVES, MACAWS & MARIMBA Head west from San José through villages, sugar cane fields and plantations to the Guacalillo Estuary, where the mangroves are alive with a colorful array of endemic birds including cuckoos, flycatchers, herons, egrets, hummingbirds and the Scarlet Macaw. This endangered bird’s conservation is key in the particular forest you’ll explore on a guided cruise through the mangroves. Keep your eyes open for ospreys, cormorants, crocodiles, iguanas and “Jesus Christ” lizards that run atop the water, as you explore the mouth of the Tárcoles River.
