Get it wrong and the audience tunes out; get it right and they’re with you through that vital commercial break; and you’ve delivered your numbers for your advertisers who will return for the next game you cover. More than that, the whole
production process can be taken from good to great by such an integrated workflow in order to produce more comprehensive post tournament highlights. Remember the key to any longer term production process in sport is being able to find the correct material easily and quickly. It’s also about finding those moments that, as before, add colour to the process — the great close up of the manager in tears; the pre-match display by the cheer leaders; the humorous moments in any large event. It may not be possible to include these moments at the time, but it’s as essential to capture the feeling of a match or a tournament as it is to cover the events on the pitch. IBIS and Orad have chosen to tackle this perennial problem in a practical and elegant way. Using IBIS MAM with its web
PowerPlay allows instant HD replay to air combined with the flexibility to capture validated metadata about the match
services API, the system has been rolled out to such diverse operations at ESPN Star Sports in Singapore, who have a real need to highlight incoming material from tennis to golf, yachting to truck racing in order to produce fast turnaround material throughout the production process in multiple
languages to multiple regions across Asia. The same production process is also in use at the Irish Parliament to capture metadata about events in the Seanad Éireann (Senate), Dáil Éireann (House of Deputies) and the various committee rooms of the Oireachtas.
The metadata store at both sites is proving invaluable at finding highlights and points of interest related to media that has long since been moved into an archive (under the control of IBIS MAM). Producers and on-screen talent can use the IBIS web client to search the metadata store for examples of
past incidents and events linked to the games they’re covering and to restore material which can be used on-air in an edit to add more depth to the on-screen analysis review. And that, after all is the whole purpose of any production process — to add colour, depth and value to content as efficiently as possible.
