Project included the migration of 10,000 hours of TRT archive


TRT transforms with file-based workflow


WHEN TURKEY’S national public broadcaster TRT began a project to transform its legacy MAM into a workflow- managed file-based system, it selected Tedial and Turkish systems integrator Datateknik to design and implement the solution. Based on software modules for ingest, MAM, business process workflow and archive management, the system sits in Ankara, the country’s capital city and freely exchanges media and metadata from other sites including Istanbul and Izmir. The two companies worked with TRT’s engineering team lead by Fikriye Berker, chief engineer, Digital Archive Systems. Together they designed the file-based system and its workflows and planned and carried out a staged decommissioning of the old MAM system. This included the migration of 10,000 hours of digitalised media, a key part of TRT’s historical archive. The Tedial workflow at


TRT comprises a group of independent modules including: Tarsys MAM, Media Process Manager (MPM), Ficus (Business Process Management), Capture Manager and AST archive. They are designed to work together seamlessly to deliver a truly comprehensive tapeless system. Providing integration to third-party applications and technology, the solution allows TRT to implement workflows that encompass the existing systems in its complex broadcast facility.


Business as usual The Tedial team began the project by making a detailed definition of each phase including the migration of media and metadata from the legacy system and full training for TRT staff in order to minimise risk. Tedial defined migration rules for the entire database including: workflows, key frames and descriptive metadata. It worked closely with Datateknik for the hardware and network installation. Ensuring operations would continue as normal until the new system was ready to go online was an important factor.

Following initial analysis, key points were identified for the successful delivery of the project including: l Data Migration — Field correspondence was established and an efficient structure for multilingual support and data indexing was defined to significantly improve database performance l Media normalisation — 10,000 hours of digitised high resolution media had been

archived in a proprietary format. This demanded the rewrapping of files in order to comply with the agreed SMPTE published standard therefore ensuring the usability of the media across all of TRT’s systems. Tedial had to apply reverse engineering to determine how new media files could be normalised with reference to SMPTE standards l Optimal access to media in the old Hierarchical storage management (HSM) system was required to ensure that the migration process could be completed within the requested deadline. and metadata was successfully migrated including logging information and high-resolution files. The migration was completed with the creation of new low-resolution proxies in H.264 format preserving the original key frames selected by TRT cataloguers, as well as new versions of the historical workflows. It was essential that the new system could support any current or future format used in TRT’s archive. Another key element was to


establish a set of standard media formats in order to make the most efficient use of stored content. Consequently the

considerations when planning the project were: l Integration of new production areas l Content distribution over networks including media reception from distributors and the delivery of content to other media enterprises l New business opportunities such as video over the internet, mobile devices and other platforms l Further optimisation of human and technical resources to increase the throughput of content.


Commenting on the system Fikriye Berker explains,


“Tedial’s technology has helped us to improve our archive system with new functionalities such as HD, Watermarking, QC and it allows us to be open to different media formats. In addition we expect to significantly improve efficiency by automating and simplifying tasks in our production workflows. “It will also enable us to optimise current media operations needed to complete the digitalisation of our historical archive. And will ensure media is readily available on the TRT network allowing us to embrace new operational opportunities that will maximise value of our content.”
