Fergal Ringrose: The difference between UBM and Intent Media is commitment to magazines

With this issue we’re also introducing a new Yudu Digital Edition reader

A statement ofIntent

company in a different direction to your division of that business. Industry-leading B2B magazines

are core to Intent Media, whether it’s Bike Biz, Develop (game development), Installation Europe, MCV(interactive entertainment), Musical Instrument Professional, Music Week, PCR (home and business computing), PSNEurope or Toy News.

Business Media By Fergal Ringrose

WELCOMETO the new-look TVBEurope magazine — it’s a bit different isn’t it! We are delighted with this redesign; it gives us a renewed pride in our magazine and we sincerely hope it meets with your approval. By all means let us know what you think — good or bad! As you know the TVBEurope

brand now produces a number of products across print, digital and events (including, of course, publication of The IBC Daily on behalf of The IBC Partnership). But the core remains this magazine. Happily, magazines are also

core to Intent Media, the company that purchased TVBEurope plus our sister titles Installation Europe, Music Week and Pro Sound News Europe from previous owner United Business Media (UBM) in summer 2011. PSNEurope has already seen a

redesign since the acquisition; this is TVBE’s; and IE is next in line. The difference between UBM and Intent Media is commitment to magazines: UBM is divesting magazines, Intent Media is investing in magazines. In 2011 UBM closed, exited or

divested 31 titles. Print accounted for more than 40% of UBM revenues in 2005. By 2011, this figure was down to 11.6%.

In 2011, UBM revenues of £972.3 million broke out as Events £396.9 million; PR Newswire £187.8 million; Data Services £187.0 million; Print £112.1 million and Marketing Services Online £88.5 million.

This is the continuation of a

strategy adopted by UBM CEO David Levin when he took the top job in 2005. The figures tell you that United Business Media is

Hence the (punning) headline to this piece: thanks to investment by Intent Media, TVBEurope now takes a giant step forward with this new look and I would like to thank Design Consultant Paul Aarons, Head of Design & Production Adam Butler, Editorial Production Manager Dawn Boultwood, Senior Production Executive Alistair Taylor and of course our editorial and sales team for bringing this new magazine to life. TVBEurope is now also available as part of Apple’s Newsstand service, offering free access to an

linkable and downloadable, and back issues from now on will be page turners. Yudu also has a vastly improved interface and it includes video capability. It’s all part of our mission to

makeTVBEurope content available across as many channels as possible, creating convenience for readers and extra value for advertisers. On the Events side of the

business, we have decided not to stage our 3D Masters conference this year and instead have brought forward our IT Broadcast Workflow event to occupy the 13 June slot at BAFTA that we had originally reserved for 3D Masters. Our judgement was that the 3DTV business is in a real state of flux right now, and in this challenging economic environment there is too much uncertainty around the viability of broadcast 3D for us to proceed — so we’ve taken a rain check on 3D Masters for 2012.

TVBEuropeis now also available as part of Apple’s Newsstand service, offering free access to an enhanced digital edition of the magazine every month

now primarily an events and data business rather than a media business — so the ‘M’ bit of UBM looks rather like a misnomer at this point. It’s hard to work for a company — and a large company, as you can see — in which the core of your business is not core business to the company. It’s quite likely you’ve been

through an acquisition or two in your career: most people in broadcast television, facilities, production, post, SIs, dealer channel and the vendor community have experienced a takeover along the way. You know it’s not tenable when the business owner, old or new, is taking the

enhanced digital edition of the magazine every month. Simply search for TVBEurope in the iTunes App Store to download the iPad app. Once it’s installed, you will be notified each time a new issue of TVBEuropemagazine is available for download. The TVBEurope iPad app includes outbound linkage throughout each issue, caters for searching every edition, includes comprehensive contents and navigation tools, and provides a number of social sharing options. With this issue we’re also

introducing a new Yudu Digital Edition reader. Of course it is page turning and viewable online anywhere anytime. It’s also

In contrast, IT Broadcast

Workflow is well established and now into its fourth year. The simple reason for its existence — the collision between the IT and broadcast engineering worlds, as we unravel our tape-based heritage in favour of file-based workflows — remains absolutely compelling and essential as you know all too well!

This is set to be a successful

event at BAFTA this summer and we would like to thank the sponsors who have already come onboard to support ITBW: Gold Sponsors AmberFin, EVS and Symbox and Silver Sponsors Blue Lucy, Pebble Beach and SGL.

Net contribution to football and ice hockey in Switzerland

Contribution Network By Jake Young

NET INSIGHT has been selected to deliver the Nimbra platform for a new media contribution network to Swisscom Broadcast covering all premier league ice hockey and football arenas in Switzerland.

The solution includes Net

Insight’s JPEG2000 high- density technology to provide low latency video compression. Swisscom Broadcast will also use the Touch&Switch application provided by Institut fur Rundfunktechnik to facilitate fast provisioning of broadcast signals complementing Net Insight’s

network management tool Nimbra Vision. “This investment will enable us to maintain our leading position in transmission of live sports content from the event location to the studios and we are confident that Net Insight and their reputable platform will support us in providing high quality broadcast to the audience,” said Olivier

Anthamatten, head of strategic projects at Swisscom Broadcast. “Swisscom Broadcast is a new important customer for us,” said Fredrik Trägårdh, CEO at Net Insight. “We are selected for our efficient and proved way of helping customers deliver live sports broadcasting where top quality video is required.” www.netinsight.net
