PLAN ES3157
Independence Cottage
This 24’ by 28’ gambrel-roofed, two-story plan features a two-car garage on its first level and a 565-sq.-ft. dwelling on the second level
GREEN HIGHLIGHTS
A The design calls for 6” SIP construction.
B Standing-seam metal roof channels water into gutters and then into a rainwater cistern.
C A rainwater cistern hides under the stairs.
D There is an integral solar and mechanical equipment closet.
E The gambrel roof is a great shape for concealing solar panels.
F Vertical axis wind generator or wind finder can be concealed in the cupola.
G The smallest plan in this year’s collection, it’s easy to achieve a very small eco-footprint.
This plan is small, but has all the elements necessary for storing cars or other mechanicals, plus a well thought out living space. This small structure can serve as a stand-alone residence—or as a secondary living unit for parking, guest housing or apartment rental income. The design doesn’t have a lot of glass, so solar orientation is less critical than some of the other plans. The living area features ample closets and linen storage, a pantry and a bathroom with a linen closet. There is a dining banquette and a sitting area with sleeper sofa, as well as a single bedroom and bath, all in a compact space.
