he Samsung Series 9 900X3A is, arguably, one of the most desirable Windows-based ultra-portables yet to hit the market. Samsung has impressed with
previous models that were both lightweight and feature- packed, but the 900X3A takes the whole concept a step further. Tis is a portable PC that really does have it all – power, functionality, a fantastic large display, backlit keyboard and stunning looks. It is also incredibly light and thin yet offers excellent battery life.

At 1.31kg, this ultra is exceptionally lightweight. In fact, you probably won’t find anything lighter of this size on the market right now. Tis is because the 900X3A is made from Duralumin – an aluminium alloy that’s twice as strong as standard aluminium and is often used in military aircraft and other highly-specialised equipment. Using this material, Samsung has been able to give the machine an exceptionally slim and aerodynamic design, while keeping it sturdy and light. Tis laptop is truly scrumptious to look at from every angle.

Impressive credentials

Samsung has used the latest dual-core Intel Core i5-2537M in the 900X3A. It’s worth dwelling on this point; this low voltage ‘Sandy Bridge’ processor provides the best efficiency-to-performance ratio available today. While it has a standard clock speed of 1.4GHz, it can
turbo up to 2.3GHz and with hyper-threading it can effectively run up to four virtual cores. Te 900X3A ships with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD – of which 98GB is usable with the rest used for the recovery partition.
Nor will you find an ultra that is better-equipped for high quality multimedia and entertainment use. Te stunning 13.3-inch edge-to-edge LCD screen gives it a futuristic, minimalist look and with 400 nit brightness and a Super Contrast ratio of 1300:1, this display is brilliant and clear. According to Samsung, it is brighter than any other 13- inch screen on the market today. You really can view the screen from any angle and in any light conditions.
Sensitive and responsive
With a backlit keyboard, you can also type in the dimmest of rooms and the multi-touch touchpad is unbelievably sensitive and responsive. It’s made from a single sheet of glass with integrated buttons – you really have to try it to understand how good it is. Audio is excellent too, the integrated 1.5W speakers generating impressive volume levels and excellent quality. It also has a high-definition, 720p webcam, so it scores well for video connections too.
As far as connectivity goes, there are USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet (an adapter is required but this is supplied as standard), and micro HDMI ports plus a micro-SD card reader and headphone/microphone jack too so, although it is very thin, the 900X3A does not want for options here. Te latest WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0 standards are supported of course.
Battery life is good too, with up to seven hours continuous use possible with power-saving features enabled. Tis is as good as anything on the market. In fact, in every single department, the Samsung Series 9 900X3A is outstanding. It has the power, the connectivity and the style to match any ultra – it is super-lightweight and, with its unique construction, also highly durable.
