ell over half of employees in the UK (62%) want to see the day-to-day software they use at work transferred to the cloud, according to a study carried out with 5,000 businesses by Virgin Media Business. Public sector organisations came


out as amongst the keenest with 61 per cent saying they would like to access all their software for work through the cloud. One in ten public sector staff already use cloud- based software on a daily basis and in the private sector, 16% of firms use the technology, with over a quarter (27%) looking to add cloud computing to their existing business model in 2012.


HP unveils Generation 8 servers


has unveiled details of its Generation 8 intelligent ProLiant servers, with new automated features and self-healing


mechanisms designed to address future needs in the datacentre and drastically reduce management costs. Te servers have an on-board chip that records everything that happens on the server that acts as an active health system. Self-provisioning features enable rapid and automated configuration. HP also claims that the new Dynamic Workload Acceleration feature can make use of SSDs and workload-aware analytics to run storage-intensive applications seven times faster. Termal imaging allows the server to run its fans dynamically to cool hotspots.


BYOD trend triggers shift in IT strategies

use of their own mobile devices for work purposes. A Computer Weekly and TechTarget survey of over 2,500 IT professionals worldwide revealed 28.9% plan to introduce initiatives to use smartphones in business, while 30.3% will enable tablet PCs.


Cisco sales at record levels C


isco exceeded analyst expectations and signalled a return to health for the networking and data centre market


when it reported record revenues of $11.5bn for the second quarter of its fiscal year (ended 8 January 2012), an 11% increase on the same quarter in the previous year and profits of $2.6bn, up 27%. Te company


is expecting revenues to grow 5% to 7% year-on-year in the current quarter. Cisco is also set to go back on the acquisition trail, according to reports, with the focus on five key areas: network switching and routing, collaboration, data centres and the cloud, other video services, and architectures for business transformation.


Smartphone shipments soar

orldwide smartphone sales soared to 149 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 47.3% increase from the previous year,


according to Gartner. Total smartphone sales in 2011 reached 472 million units and accounted for almost a third (31%) of all mobile devices sales, up 58% from 2010.


Enterprises use IT to drive energy efficiency
