Computer 2000 explains value of distribution in public sector market

C

omputer 2000 attended the recent Public Sector Efficiency Expo as both an exhibitor and presenter in March 2012 www.publicsector-efficiency-

expo.co.uk. Distributors handle the majority of the IT and technology products purchased by the public sector in the UK and we feel it’s important that our partners and decision-makers in the public sector understand the important role we play in ensuring that products and services are delivered efficiently and effectively.

Distribution essentially brings technology to market and with the focus and resources we are putting into the public sector, Computer 2000 can help you succeed in this sector. At the Efficiency Expo event, Peter Hubbard, Managing Director of Computer 2000 for the UK and Ireland explained the value of distribution to resellers with public sector contract requirements, the growth opportunities and technologies that we see for SMB partners, and how resellers can work with Computer 2000 to deliver against their IT contracts.

We want Computer 2000 to become the partner of choice for resellers engaging with the public sector – if you’d like to find out how we plan to do that, please email Cathi.Low@computer2000.co.uk.

ICT gets off lightly in government cutback plans

C

uts to ICT budgets will make up only a tiny fraction of the £5bn spending reductions that the government expects to achieve in the current financial year. Last month, Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude, said that

efficiency drives have saved £3.25bn in 2011 and that work being carried out to reduce waste in areas such as fraud, error and debt would mean that projected savings for the full financial year will be around £5bn.

ICT spending however looks to be getting off lightly with a reduction of only £140m. Tis will be achieved by the government demanding a rigorous business case for any significant ICT spend. Spending will only be sanctioned where it is absolutely necessary to bring government in line with standard business practices.

Most of the savings will come from cuts in the use of consulting and agency staff (expected to save £1.1bn) and a reduction in the size of the Civil Service (£800m savings). While the government’s stated aim of ‘ending the days of large, costly projects that don’t deliver’, may threaten some ICT programmes, there are also plans to accelerate the use of digital technology to put more services online, which may increase technology spending in some areas.

SMB resellers can compete on level playing field in the CloudStore

A

number of Computer 2000’s reseller partners have been authorised as suppliers for G-Cloud. With the app store now live, there is every opportunity

for resellers to win new business from government organisations.

Te CloudStore is the online app store of the government’s £60m G-Cloud framework. It features 1,700 ‘off-the-shelf’ IT services from 257 suppliers, and will make it ‘quicker, easier, cheaper and more transparent for the public sector and suppliers alike,’ according to Francis Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office.

While a number of big name suppliers are on the list, around half the suppliers are SMB, so there is every reason to think you could also make it onto the CloudStore. Maude said: ‘By creating a competitive marketplace, the G-Cloud framework will constantly encourage service providers to improve the quality and value of the solutions they offer, reducing the cost to taxpayers and suppliers,’ said Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude,

when launching the services. ‘It gives SMB suppliers of niche products the same opportunities as bigger organisations supplying services.’

A number of prominent resellers are already on the list including Insight, which was one of only a handful of companies to win listing in the four separate areas of the framework. Other resellers on the list include Computacenter, 2e2, Esteem Systems, OCF, ONI, Probrand, Redstone Converged Solutions, Softcat, SCC, Te Portal Partnership, Transputec and Trustmarque.

Services being offered through G-Cloud include email, word processing, system hosting, ERP, electronic records management, customer relationship management and office productivity applications. Te government plans to re-open the framework to applications from new suppliers in the spring. If you would like information or advice on how to get onto the list, please get in touch with Cathi Low, Director Public Sector at Computer 2000 – email Cathi.Low@computer2000.co.uk.
