SQL Server 2012 – so easy to sell

Microsoft has simplified the SQL Server offering to three main products:

Enterprise Edition – for mission critical applications and data warehousing. • Advanced high availability with AlwaysOn • High performance data warehousing with ColumnStore

• Maximum virtualisation (with Software Assurance) • Inclusive of Business Intelligence edition’s capabilities.

Business Intelligence Edition – a new edition for premium corporate and self-service BI. • Rapid data discovery with Power View • Corporate and scalable reporting and analytics • Data Quality Services and Master Data Services • Inclusive of the Standard edition’s capabilities.

Standard Edition for basic database, reporting, and analytics • Continues to offer basic database, reporting and analytics capabilities.

Web, Developer and Express editions will also be available; The Web Edition will be offered only to hosting providers via the Services Provider Licence Agreement (SLPA). Developer, Express and Compact Editions will also continue to be distributed without licensing or pricing changes. A range of appliances including Parallel Data Warehouse, a BI appliance, and a database consolidation appliance will also be available.

A new

approach to licensing

Licensing for SQL Server editions is now aligned with how customers consume solutions: • License by cores for Enterprise • License per users/devices for Business Intelligence • Choice of licensing for Standard

Microsoft has also extended virtualisation and cloud benefits for cloud-optimised licensing under software assurance: • Licence ability for a single VM or unlimited virtualisation

• Licence mobility across private and public clouds.

SQL Server 2012 will simplify customer options with three main editions that are closely aligned with how customers use SQL Server across workloads. SQL Server 2012 will also deliver licensing which enables customers to more easily take advantage of the benefits of public and private cloud through virtualisation and licence mobility.
