Chapple joins Commission

The Gambling Commission has appointed former Hills and Tote executive Andrew Chapple as a senior advisor. Chapple had recently moved on from the Tote following the completion of the Betfred takeover, having previously spent nearly a decade in William Hill’s Remote division. Chapple will be providing special- ist support to the Commission’s money laundering compliance regime and helping to develop the role of audit in the assessment of larger operators. He is also providing additional advice and direct insight on recent industry developments to the Commission’s remote gambling compliance team.

Etches to head up new-look Responsible Gambling Trust

In the latest change to the industry’s method of reducing problem gambling, a new merged body is to be called the Responsible Gambling Trust.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY I

n what will hopefully be the last shake- up of the mechanism with which the gambling industry funds socially respon- sible initiatives, the merger of the GREaT Foundation and The Responsible Gam- bling Fund is on track for in April 2012, when the combined organisations will form the Responsible Gambling Trust. The Responsible Gambling Trust will adopt the fundraising and commissioning roles of the two merged organisations. The merger and name change means that the social responsibility sector has almost come full circle from the days when it was called the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT), with a brief, wasteful foray into quango territory.

Marc Etches, current CEO at Great Foundation, will take the role at the Responsible Gambling Trust, which claims to be ‘dedicated to minimising the level of problem gambling in Britain through effective education and preven- tion techniques, which stop people getting into problems with their gam- bling, and ensuring that those that do develop problems receive fast and effec- tive treatment and support’.

The Trust plans to become the indus- try brand for responsible gambling and to ensure that legitimate business growth and job creation is balanced with social protection of the weak and vul- nerable in society

Etches commented: “It gives me great pleasure to take on this new and exciting role. As chief executive of the Responsi- ble Gambling Trust, it is my intention that we continue to build on and main- tain effective partnership working with industry executives and representation bodies; treatment service providers and the research community; as well as legis- lators and regulators to ensure that the national responsible gambling strategy is delivered successfully and that the Responsible Gambling Trust becomes the industry brand for responsible gam- bling.”

He added: “Furthermore, in bringing the fundraising and commissioning activ- ities together under one roof, we aim to significantly reduce our overall running costs to ensure that donations are used to maximum effect and support the benefi- ciaries for which they were intended.”

Neil Goulden, chairman of The GREaT Foundation, Responsible Gambling Fund, Responsible Gambling Trust, added: “The Trust plans to become an independent, authoritative and respected voice for responsible gambling in Britain. It will commission effective and value for money services from treatment and education providers through a commissioning approach focussing on partnership working and appropriate evaluation, which is proportional to the relevant grant. Over the next few weeks the merger of the Responsible Gambling Fund and The GREaT Foundation will be completed and announcements regarding further staff appointments will be made in due course.”

During 2010/11 the GREaT Foundation raised £5.024m from the gambling indus- try for problem gambling research, edu- cation and treatment - an increase of 0.5 per cent on the previous year. During this period 209 organisations donated to GREaT for the very first time and this helped swell its total number of donors for the year to over 900 - a 9.6 per cent increase on 2009/10.
