EA RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoningtook the No.1 spot during a disappointing week for game sales.
It outperformed rival RPG and SQUARE ENIX sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2, which fell one position to No.2 following a 54 per cent week-on-week sales dip. It managed to beat other more established IP such as Final Fantasyand The Darkness.
However, the large quanitity of big new releases didn’t perhaps sell as well as publishers would’ve hoped. The market value dropped from £14.9m to £12.7m week-on-week. No wonder new IP such as Reckoninghad a stronger chance of topping the charts.
The last new IP to reach the No.1 spot at launch was Dead Islandfrom DEEP SILVER, which still sits in the Top 40 at No.28, although that sold considerably more at launch compared to Reckoning. Deep Silver also saw its new bizarre Japanese puzzler Catherine make its chart debut at No.20.
2K GAMES’ The Darkness II was the second top-selling new game of the week. This first- person horror shooter made its debut at No.3. Meanwhile, last week’s No.2 Metal Gear Solid HD Collectionfrom KONAMI fell to No.4 following a 49 per cent drop in sales.
Other than Reckoning, EA had two other titles in the Top Ten – FIFA 12at No.5 and Battlefield 3at No.6. The latter bettered its main FPS rival Modern Warfare 3from ACTIVISION, which remained steady at No.7. EA also released Grand Slam Tennis 2last week which entered the Top 40 at No.26.
SEGA’s Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games vaulted up 19 positions from No.29 to No.10. This was due to the 3DS version hitting shelves.
