EA is back at the top following two months away from No.1. Activision was top for November, while Ubisoft ruled December. EA’s success is largely down to FIFA, which was the No.1 game for the month. Meanwhile, Battlefield 3 reached No.2 in the monthly Top 50, beating Modern Warfare 3.

Consumers wanting to shed a few Christmas pounds picked up fitness games, primarily 505 Games’ duo of Zumba Fitnesstitles, which has helped the publisher re-enter the Top 10 publisher rankings. However, with barely any new games out, there was only slight changes in the publisher rankings this week.

The 3DS’ software market share slipped behind PC this month, but it is still in a far healthier position than it was six months ago. Wii’s software market share remains robust month-on-month, down only slightly compared with Christmas (which is traditionally the Wii’s strongest month). DS’ software share actually grew, thanks to Moshi Monstersand Professor Layton.

As for the non-Nintendo platforms, Xbox 360 and PS3 are still the market leaders. With Xbox 360 software sales accounting for a third of the market. However, both platforms are slightly down month- on-month in terms of units and value. Meanwhile, PC software market share has jumped up month-on- month. Football Manager 2012and Star Wars: The Old Republicwere the biggest PC games of January.
