Novosystems of Germany has introduced a new range of micro-granular colorants, which it claims fills the performance and product handling gap between current liquid and conventional masterbatch products. The Novopearls micro-
granulates comprise a colorant in a carrier of a special wax that is said to be compatible with a wide range of thermo- plastics. With a typical particle size of 450 microns, the products are free-flowing and can be dosed at higher addition levels than most liquid colorants, claims the company. The wax carrier has been
formulated to melt at 85˚C, which is considerably less than the plastic being processed

Tio2 alternative
from PQ
US-based PQ Corp has launched a new inorganic additive that it claims can be used as a partial replace- ment for titanium dioxide in polymer compound and colour formulations. Titanium dioxide prices
have been rising fast in recent months due to demand outstripping supply capacity. PQ Corp says its Advera Ti zeolite presents a cost effective alternative to titanium dioxide that provides comparable performance. ❙

BASF has launched a new addition to its Ultradur PBT product line – Ultradur High Gloss B5470 – targeted at applications such as headlamp bezels where very low levels of outgassing are required. Outgassing of PBT at
elevated temperatures can result in fogging of the headlamp lens. It is a problem for car designers because the more complex geometries and limited space in modern headlamp designs is leading to higher operating temperatures. The new Ultradur grade is
said to display very low outgassing. Tested in
and means that the processor benefits from the same streak-free results expected of liquid systems. The granules can be used to accurately dose colorants and additives at levels of 0.1-0.9% and the technology is claimed to be highly cost effective – savings of up to 30% are claimed over traditional alternatives. Novopearls can be
formulated to the user’s requirements or mixed on site using blending. The blends can be dosed on conventional equipment with a suitable screw upgrade. Alternatively, specialised equipment is available from Novosystems or Movacolor. ❙

Medical
non-healing lsr from Wacker
Silpuran 6610/40 is a new liquid silicone rubber from Wacker targeted at produc- tion of radiation-sterlisable silicone valves used in medical devices. The new grade is intended
for production of “slit” valves for applications such as infusion systems, where it displays a high resistance to healing during sterilisation without the need to use additional release additives. According to Wacker, the
specially formulated grade shows no healing even when exposed to radiation levels much higher than typical sterilisation requirements. ❙

accordance with Toyota’s demanding headlamp fogging procedure, the new grade delivers a haze value of 2.2 and clarity value of 88 on a glass plate after 24 hours at 160˚C, which BASF says is classed as
minimal outgassing. The material also displays a high surface gloss and is suitable for metallisation without any special process- ing requirements. ❙
