First dolphin soft-touch parts take to the road
the first commercial applica- tions for engel’s dolphin soft- touch over-moulding technol- ogy – cockpit covers for the new Mercedes Benz Actros truck – went into production at the end of last year. the parts, which include a
variety of cabin covers and blinds, are produced at the daimler factory at wörth in Germany by italian automotive components maker Sole. they are produced on an engel duo injection machine with a horizontal intermediate rotary table, multi-axis robot and Mucell physical foaming unit. the dolphin process was
first launched in 2007 and allows a soft touch microcel- lular foamed thermoplastic elastomer (tPe) to be applied over a rigid thermoplastic structure in a single process step. the original concept was
developed by engel in partnership with Swiss

proceeded as planned,” said engel’s sales manager for technologies Michael Fischer.
“the dolphin method’s potential is enormous due to the high level of process integration as well as the high quality concerning the component’s surfaces.” engel sees dolphin as an
alternative method of produc- tion for a wide range of automotive interior parts currently using polyurethane foaming technology. ❙
