Injection World reports Packaging designs deliver increased functionality

the German Packaging Awards competition, organised by deutsches Verpackungsinstitut (dVi), has long recognised innovation in the functionality and perform- ance of packaging designs. winners of the 34th

annual

contest – selected from more than 230 entries - were announced in november last year at Germany’s Brau Beviale exhibition in nuremburg and included several injection moulded products. in the transport packaging category, Menden, Germany-based returnable packaging manufacturer Delbrouck won an award for its beer bottle crate design for Alfa Brouwerij, of limburg in the netherlands, which uses in-mould labelling (iMl) technology to provide seamless full surface branding. delbrouck worked for more than a year to develop the design and iMl handling for the project, which allows a high quality, seamless and scratch resistant label to be applied around the full perimeter of the injection moulded crate. rounded corner sections are included in the new crate design to allow the label to wrap the part during production. the design meets all requirements for washing and stacking. Alfa produced a new label for

the crate that fully exploited the potential of the iMl technique. the photo-realistic full colour design incorporates beer splashes at each corner that are intended to

convey an image of quality and freshness. delbrouck is part of the wilms Group of companies. it

operates more than 40 injection moulding machines at its sites at Menden and Huehaus-Schierschnitz in Germany, producing up to 60,000 crates and pallets a day. iMl also featured among the winners in the sales

(retail) packaging category, with Hockenheim-head- quartered Weidenhammer Packaging Group awarded for the use of its Permasafe high barrier PP packaging by premium food company Appel Feinkost. weidenhammer describes the

Permasafe pack as “the reinvention of the can.” it uses a multi-layer full- surface barrier iMl label to provide extended shelf life packaging for preserved non-

refrigerated foodstuffs. Appel is using it to package a range of four herring speciality products. the injection moulded pack

provides greater flexibility in design than traditional glass and metal packaging. Appel, for instance, is exploiting the techni- que to create an embossed effect on the surface of the packaging to further reinforce its premium positioning. this is the firt time weidenhammer has used an
