The best in glass Demand throughout 2010 and at least through the first half of this year grew significantly for the two major segments of the global reinforced thermoplastics market: short glass-fibre reinforced thermoplastics based on chopped strand products and long fibre thermoplastics (LFT) based on long glass rovings. The company’s Advantex DS2200-10P product is a 10 µm chopped strand glass fibre which is said to further boost the overall performance of PP compounds, extending their range of high-end applica- tions. claimed to provide excellent dry-as-moulded (DAM) performance along with a high percentage of property retention after hydrolysis or heat aging. While low-micron diameter glass fibres are widely used in polyamide and polyester resins, their use in PP is innovative and opens up new opportunities in automotive components especially. Examples include semi-structural interior components, under-the-hood applications and highly-loaded technical parts such as engine and gearbox mounts. The combination of the latest sizing technology with 10 µm glass fibre is said to provide an increase in tensile strength of up to 12% compared to current market offerings. Impact resistance is also said to be improved by up to 15%, allowing PP to compete well with other thermoplastic resins when replacing metals in demanding applications. Martin cites specific examples of challenging


commercial applications including the first glass fibre PP serial air intake manifold for VW, rear seat carriers for BMW and pedal carriers for Fiat developed by global PP market leader Borealis. 3B’s other new chopped strand grade is Advantex


DS1120-13P, a 13µm diameter product aimed at general- purpose polyamide applications. It has been developed as a cost-competitive reinforcement for polyamides in applications where hydrolysis resistance is not essential. The chopped strand is designed for use in a broad


range of polyamides including PA6, PA6,6, PA6,10 and PA12, along with their related co-polymers. The chemical sizing and binding technology of the product is said to provide superior performance when measured dry as moulded (DAM) and displays low sensitivity to mould release agents such as stearates. This product also boasts good strand integrity and bulk density, ensuring optimum feeding and dispersion within the resin matrix, according to 3B. Target applications
